Self storage complexes have sprung up all over the United States and Canada in recent years. Whoever originated the self storage unit concept certainly struck gold! College students who need space to store their belongings between terms, homeowners in the midst of remodeling their homes, even people who need to store items belonging to a recently deceased loved one, all need extra space for their possessions. A self storage unit provides the ideal solution.
Rural and suburban self storage facilities are generally constructed as rows of individual units separated from each other by driving lanes. Individual units within these complexes come in a few different sizes to suit various storage needs and are naturally ventilated, but not climate controlled. They are also generally without windows, enclosed by corrugated metal walls and topped by chain link or wire mesh ceiling material. The renter uses his or her own lock to secure a self storage unit. Some outdoor self storage facilities do also provide security measures such as controlled access by keypad entry, security guards, individual door alarms and surveillance cameras.
Self storage facilities located in urban (and some suburban) areas are constructed as multi story, climate controlled facilites with access to individual units via elevator or freight lift. Some facilities also employ loading docks, moving dollies and rolling carts to assist customers with unloading and transporting their possessions to their units.
Regardless of design, self storage facilites impose certain general restrictions on what kinds of items can be stored in their units. Nontoxic, nonhazardous and nonperishable materials, personal items and motorcycles and bicycles may be stored in self storage facilities. Retail overstock is also allowed, so long as it meets the criteria for acceptable materials. Customers are most definitely NOT allowed to sleep or generally live out of their self storage units.
Self storage facilities do not claim ownership of their customers possessions, unless a customer fail to make rent payments or otherwise break the terms of the lease. In rent nonpayment cases, a facility can place a lien on a units contents and sell them at auction if the customer continues to fail to pay the rent. The defaulting customer is also responsible for the difference if the funds realized at auction do not completely cover the amount of the lien.
Finally, keep in mind that self storage facilities to not insure tenant possessions within the individual units. Place special tenants insurance coverage on your possessions to protect yourself in the event your things are damaged or stolen. See also Long distance moving companies ...
