The use of vpn is widespread in the corporate world. The need to connect to network resources from outside the company is pretty common. Without the ability to vpn in to a network, then computer users have to be physically connected within the company firewall, either by wireless or patch connection. When there is a need to perform work not at work, the ability to vpn in to the network gives workers the power to perform most job functions without having to drive in to the office. As technology advances, vpn capabilities are growing beyond using a client on a traditional desktop or laptop computer.
There are vpn clients now for devices such as cell phones and clientless web browser based vpn tunnel. The web based tunnel is devoid of the need to perform an installation of a client program that is used exclusively to establish the connection to the firewall or vpn appliance back at the office. A public web site is accessed through a qualified web browser and the user then enters credentials when prompted. A session is then generated that allows the computer to tunnel back to the home office using the secure session created by the browser.
Vpn clients are also available for smart phones. The ultimate in mobility is presented by the ability for a user to connect to the home office using a smart device to remote back into the office from anywhere with a 3G cellular data connection. Intranet sites can be accessed using the browser built into the phone and other remote connection clients can be installed to the phone. Clients that allow SSH connections and telnet connections, as well as remote desktop protocol clients that can control desktop and laptop computers remotely. The use of vpn allows greater convenience for all users who need to do work outside of work.
