If you arent aware of it yet, blogging has become a definitive aspect of todays online experience, and it seems that more and more people are taking up this pursuit. You probably know one or two people who are knee deep into blogging right now, and you may even be a regular blogger yourself. Blogging is truly an immensely popular pursuit youd better believe it, and that popularity is expected to grow even more exponentially over the next few years.
But what exactly is blogging and what makes it so immensely popular? And perhaps more interestingly, how can you benefit from this rampaging global phenomenon that has the entire online world in its grips?
The key actually lies in the basic human need to connect to other people. The vast opportunities for interaction on the Internet is something that is quite commonplace nowadays, and yet we still want more: more information, more contacts, and more people to add to our ever growing list of personal and business relationships. It is this unquenchable thirst for touching base with people that has ensured the steady growth and popularity of blogging.
Of course, there are other ways to reach out to other people online, and avenues such as email and message boards remain in widespread use. Nevertheless, few can compare to blogging in terms of immediacy and free flowing discourse. There are forms of online communication such as instant messaging as well, but they do not allow for extended exchanges as easily or as elegantly as blogging can.
It is interesting to note that blogging started out as pretty much an online version of a diary, in which the writer could share his or her thoughts to a select group of people. Other blogs were utilized for more straightforward announcements and editorials, which was a common practice in the medical and industrial communities, as well as in the academe. The flow of communication back then was therefore limited towards the audience. With more readers catching on to the interactive elements of blogging however this exchange became quite a bit more democratic. This gave rise to the present incarnation of the blog as a place wherein everyone has a voice.
The potential for the blogging medium is vast, and we have yet to see just how far this cultural phenomenon will grow. Going from initial indications alone, blogging is certain to have a lasting impact, the significance of which we have yet to see.
