No one wants to get behind in paying off their student credit cards... but sometimes it happens. And no one wants to deal with their creditors, but if your financial situation has gone sour, eventually youll need to. Doing it right away is better than facing your creditors after the situation has worsened. When you still have control of the situation, you can negotiate with your creditors; when its gotten out of hand and bill collectors are dunning you, you have much less power to control the problems resolution. You might even discover that talking with the company that owns your student credit cards is easier and a more pleasant experience than you expected. Here are some steps to take when you find that you cant keep up with your credit card payments:
* Act at once. Dont wait for the account to go into collections, or for bill collectors to start dunning you. The moment you know your problems arent something your next paycheck will fix, call your credit card company and start negotiating with them.
* Know exactly where you stand financially. Find out exactly how much you owe and who you owe it to, what your monthly income is, when you can expect your income to arrive, how much you must pay for other expenses and when you must pay, and based on that, exactly how much you can afford to pay to your student credit card lender. Educate yourself about which expenses need to be paid off first. When you state your case for the credit card agent, he or she will give far more weight to your statements if you have done the background work and can back them up.
* Have a solution in mind. If the problem is as simple as not getting a paycheck until next week, ask whether you can pay the bill late this month without a penalty. If your minimum payment is greater than the amount you can afford to pay, ask whether the company will lower the payments on your student credit cards for a while. (They are considerably more likely to agree if you can tell them how long your current crisis will last and when you can start paying the full minimum amount again.)
* Now get in touch with your card issuer. When you owe money and cant pay, facing the people you owe money to can be daunting, but you need to face your fears. And you may find that the company that issues your student credit cards is more than willing to help you out. Times are tough all around; companies understand that the best way to get their money back is to work with you, their customer.
* Be calm, concise, and polite. Start with a brief recap of your problem, mentioning only factors that have a direct impact on your situation and listing actions youre taking to improve your finances. Stay calm, no matter what. If the representative you are speaking to is not helpful, dont lose your temper at them, which will cause them to hang up and perhaps to put a black mark on your record. Just ask to speak to another representative or their supervisor, or end the conversation and call back later to get a different representative. Be honest, no matter how tempting it might be to stretch the truth. And be willing to negotiate. What you initially ask for may be impossible, but the representative may be able to work out another deal with you that also solves your problem with your student credit cards.
Financial troubles can be frightening, especially when youre new to living on your own. However, you dont need to go into default and lose your student credit cards to escape your situation. Talk with your creditors, and work out a solution that will get you back on your feet. Links Student credit cards . Credit cards . Best credit cards .
